Google Testing Local News Card
Posted: August 5, 2013 by Alex Chan
A local news card is a feature that brings the latest news to people on a local level without them having to search for it specifically. It includes any type of news that is closely connected to the area such as a neighborhood or even the street people live in. Many companies have tried to include a local news card into their services, but have failed along the way. Companies like EveryBlock and Outside.in tried to solve the hyperlocal news card problem without much luck in the past and Google is the latest company that is reportedly working on bringing a local news card into the Google Now services.
Google Now, according to experts, is the best platform that could support the local news card as it already provides people with local weather information, info about local businesses as well as info about local events. Google has not released an official statement regarding the local news card, however, the company's Vice President, Johanna Wright, mentioned the upcoming project in an interview for Quarts last week. Users may have been witnesses of a sneak preview of the local news card with the Onebox card test which was released in July.
