Jay-Z fans got a pleasant surprise last week during the fifth game of the NBA Finals. On Sunday night, the rapper appeared on a Samsung commercial that was aired during the game which announced the release of his new album Magna Carta Holy Grail.
The biggest surprise came when he announced that the first million people who are Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 and Galaxy Note 2 users will have an exclusive opportunity to get the album on July 4 before it goes on sale. All Samsung owners have to do is install the "Magna Carta Holy Grail" application from June 24 and hope to be among the first million lucky fans.
According to Wall Street, the Korean tech giant paid $5 million (or $5 an album) to Jay-Z before the release of the album. Many experts see this move as a good business strategy for the company. Samsung may be the biggest smartphone seller in the world but they are still unable to compete with Apple in the US.
With this deal, the Korean company is hoping to gain credibility among US users, and raise their company's popularity. Among other things, they hope the deal will also help Music Hub compete with the upcoming iTunes Radio.
