When it comes to aircrafts, planes are built for speed and helicopters are designed to maneuver. That's not the case for the new Eurocopter X3. The new hybrid copter has two additional wings equipped with propellers. The wings provide a vertical lift of 80% and there are two 2270 HP Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 engines that power the rotors.
During its first set of test flights in Istres, France, the Eurocopter X3 reached speeds of 300 mph. The test pilot said that even at those incredible speeds, the aircraft demonstrated excellent performances in stability and low vibrations. This is even more impressive since the Eurocopter doesn't come equipped with an anti-vibrating system.
So far, the Eurocopter X3 has passes more than 140 hours of air time and the results are excellent. The positive results mark the beginning of a new helicopter era where the X3 turbo technology will slowly enter into mass production. The Eurocopter CEO believes the company would start selling its turbo technology to other companies in the near future.
